The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS) is an association/community of lay members who embrace a vocation to pursue Christian perfection, in the world, according to the spirit and ideals of the Order. The emphasis is on:
The Secular Carmelite is encouraged, as far as possible, to assist at daily Mass; to have a special devotion to Mary; to undertake spiritual reading, especially the Scriptures and the Carmelite writings (of St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, St Therese of the Child Jesus, among others).
They are encouraged to foster a spirit of detachment – not so much a giving up of things, but rather giving up our selfishness and denying ourselves, to practice fraternal charity and participate in the Church’s apostolate.
