Dear Brothers and Sisters in Carmel,
Jesus says “Come!” He never ceases to call us. Even in our darkest moments – “Come, My beloved, come.” It is over to us to respond. He does not force us, but continues to call.
We have an ideal means of response this month – our Community Retreat!
Come – with empty hands and an open heart. Recognize that the language of God is silence! (John of the Cross) Come and let’s truly hear the words of the Prophet Jerimiah (20:7) – “You have seduced me O Lord! And I have been seduced!” Our one aim in life, especially as Carmelites, is to seek union with God. He says, “Come,” “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Our annual Retreat is an essential part of who we are as Secular Carmelites. It is not treated as an optional luxury, but as a core component of both initial and ongoing formation. It must not be dismissed lightly. It is an essential obligation to strengthen and nourish our Carmelite vocation.
Our time of Retreat is a perfect time to reflect on what we have committed ourselves to when we made our Promises. It is solemn, and it is serious. So, let’s take it head on and see and rejoice in how we shall grow as Carmelites.
I thank Megan and her team for the wonderful work done in organising our Retreats. There is much that goes into it, as I very well know after my many years ‘on the job’ with Margaret and Mary.
Just a little note that our dear Gay is moving into her newly rebuilt home, and so will be at the same address as before.
Let us also remember the Holy Souls in Purgatory in this month of November, dedicated to them. Let us remember especially the deceased members of our Peace of Christ Community. I think there is more of them ‘up there’ than ‘here’! Also, those who have nobody to pray for them, especially Priests and Bishops.
Eternal rest grant to them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, may they rest in peace. Amen.
